The Department 56 Story

The Department 56 Story - About Us

One Christmas evening, a group of friends set off to enjoy a dinner of celebration at a small country inn nestled in a quiet river town. As they rounded a bend in the road, they saw the small, old-fashioned village decorated for the holidays. The lights, like fairies, glowed and sparkled amid the freshly fallen snow. All evening, the conversation was full of Christmas memories and the visions the tiny town had evoked. Amidst the jovial banter and magical memories, the idea for a lighted Christmas village was born. That spark of an idea became a reality when, in 1976, Department 56 introduced a series of six hand-painted, ceramic buildings. The rest is history.

The company behind the villages.

Over thirty years ago, Department 56 began as part of Bachman's, a premiere retail florist in Minneapolis. Bachman's used a numbering system to identify each of its departments. The number assigned to wholesale gift imports division was, you guessed it, 56.

Now headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Department 56 has become a leader in the giftware, collectibles and holiday decorating industry and is best known for our hand-crafted lighted villages, Snowbabies™ figurines and extensive lines of holiday and home decorative products.

2017

Licensed products continue to play a major role in the popularity of Department 56 products. We saw “Candy Crush”, “Pete the Cat”, “Pusheen”, “Disney”, the “Grinch”, “Dr. Seuss”, “Rudolph”, Jack Daniel”, “Margaritaville”, and “Elf on the Shelf” lead the way in our seasonal and everyday giftware lines.

On the Village front, our collectors were excited to add an all-American series inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, the iconic and internationally known architect, and a gift set based on the “American Gothic” by American painter Grant Wood. And because we appeal to collectors of all ages, our new “Margaritaville” Village series and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” held a race to the top of the popularity list.

We continue to offer the classic Snowbabies by artist Kristi Jensen Pierro as well her irreverent and just plain sassy “Snowpinions” collection that include gifts for girlfriends and best buddies. And a whole group of seasonal Santas continue to delight collectors of the "Possible Dreams."

2018

Setting up a Village has become a tradition that is passed down by many families. We were proud to introduce a new boxed set series in 2018 called the “Silver Series” to help families in a more economical way to begin this tradition. We have introduced boxed sets that include a lit building made of highly detailed resin, an appropriately sized, coordinating accessory, a bag of snow and a tree.

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” continues to be one of our most popular licensed groupings and the collectors seem to thoroughly enjoy each new introduction to this growing series. Other licensed favorite include Disney, The Grinch, “A Christmas Story”, Peanuts and our newest licenses, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “The Addams Family” and “Harry Potter.”

2018 also saw the reappearance of the Easter/Spring Village pieces with the introduction of the “Easter Sweets House”, a boxed set.

Inspired by a famous painting, “Peaceable Kingdom” by Edward Hicks, our Snowbabies’ artist Kristi Jensen Pierro introduced us to some of her favorite animals this year in her new sub-series, “Peaceable Kingdom.” The Snowbabies are joined by a gentle bear, the majestic lion, a llama, a kangaroo and a lamb.

Our love affair with “Harry Potter” continues to be the hottest new series for our Villages. Village artist, Paul Lundberg has captured the spirit of Hogwarts and the magic of everything that happens there in the highly detailed resin pieces that grace this collection. Each piece come straight from the pages of J.K. Rowling’s fantastical books.

The “Possible Dreams” Santas are each designed with a nod to the original Santa Claus who is a very busy man. Each figurine is hand sculpted with unique facial expressions and poses, personality and sometimes, humor – no two Santas are the same!

And Village artist, Tom Bates took over the duties of designing the Dickens’ Village, a task he is thoroughly enjoying especially with all the architectural features that Tom is so good at capturing.

Our sassy “Snowpinions” continue to delight girlfriends and millennials with their witty sayings and slightly irreverent styles. These are a must for gift exchanges and hostess gifts. Artist Kristi Jensen Pierro continues to come up with appropriate ways to make our little snow people an endearing part of the holidays.

2021

In 2021, we found ourselves smackdab in the middle of a pandemic, the world slowed down, and everyone was determined to make their homes a more comfortable place. Many new collectors found the Department 56 Villages, and those who already loved the Villages took more time to build and create scenes that made them happy.

Licensing was quite appealing to the newer collectors. Our Harry Potter Village really took off and showed us that this intricately designed series would be around for a very long time. The artist who created this Village was Paul Lundberg, who loves the book series and it really shows in the final results.

2021 saw the retirement of the classic Alpine Village which was originally introduced in 1986.

2022

This year we surprised collectors by bringing back (with a new design) an integral piece for The Original Snow Village, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Collectors were polled and we discovered that the “Chester House” (the Griswolds’ nextdoor neighbors) was a piece that many collectors had missed the first time around. The responses to our survey were overwhelmingly positive and Snow Village artist, Scott Enter answered the call with a new rendition of an old favorite.

Another collector favorite, The Grinch, was added to other Department 56/Enesco lines including the popular “Snowpinions” designed by artist Kristi Jensen Pierro. Plush items, hats, lap throws, and mittens were offered, and grinches everywhere could be seen sporting Grinch-ware!
